Oral Care Trends to Watch in 2026

By Henry, TANNIN co-founder

Change in oral care doesn’t happen overnight. Spending the last 3 years in the industry has revealed to me that the industry tends to move at the pace of a tortoise wearing ankle weights. When the same major players like Crest, Oral-B, and Colgate have dominated for generations, people get comfortable and innovation slows.

But 2025 cracked something open. A new spotlight landed on oral health as research continued to reveal compelling links between oral bacteria, systemic inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and even longevity. If you want a deep dive, the American Heart Association did a helpful overview of the mouth-heart connection.

As people started seeing oral health less like a chore and more like an investment in their whole body wellness, behavior is shifting. Here are the oral care trends I expect to shape 2026:

1. Fluoride is out, nano hydroxyapatite in

If fluoride were a celebrity, it would be Ellen DeGeneres. A long time fan favorite whose reputation took a hit fast. For decades fluoride has been untouchable in American oral care. But as wellness culture leans holistic and more people scrutinize ingredients, fluoride has found itself under renewed debate, particularly regarding neurological exposure at high levels.

Regardless of where you land on the fluoride conversation, the reality is clear. Nano hydroxyapatite is taking over. Long loved in Japan since the 1970s and widely used across Europe, this biomimetic mineral remineralizes enamel by replenishing the same material our teeth are made of. The evidence is strong too. A Dec. 2024 meta-analysis concluded that nano hydroxyapatite is as effective as fluoride for remineralization.

And here in the U.S., it is finally storming its way into bathrooms with the enthusiasm of someone who just discovered TikTok at age 40.

2. Convenience is king

I’m glad to admit that I love a good floss session. I like the rhythm. I like the victory of conquering every last crevasse.

So when electric flossers and touchless toothbrushes started trending, I was skeptical. But they are everywhere now, and they exist for one reason: people want less effort without sacrificing impact. Even if the effectiveness debate rages on, consumer behavior is loud and clear. If a device can let people keep scrolling while their teeth get cleaner, they will buy it.

Ease wins. It is that simple.

3. Oral probiotics are on the rise

The gut microbiome has been the star of the wellness world for years, but 2025 marked a turning point. The oral microbiome is finally getting its moment, and people are taking notice.

Research is now showing how oral bacteria influence everything from cavity risk to inflammation to halitosis. As this understanding grows, probiotics and prebiotics designed specifically to balance the oral microbiome are becoming mainstream.

At the same time, harsh antimicrobials and certain essential oils are under scrutiny for the collateral damage they may cause. It is less about killing everything and more about cultivating balance.

4. Oral care beyond the bathroom

Oral care used to happen twice a day. That was it. But now, with stress at an all time high and in person connection growing again, people want freshness and confidence throughout the day. Oral care is leaving the bathroom and entering daily life. Quick, portable, lifestyle aligned solutions are taking over.

Our post coffee mouth rinse and the emergence of xylitol gums weren’t just fun ideas. They were a response to something people clearly wanted instant freshness and long term health in one motion. This desire will only grow as the link between oral health and whole body wellness becomes more widely discussed.

The future is fresh

At TANNIN, we want to make oral care something people are excited about. Because when habits feel good, they stick. And better habits mean better health.

Here’s to a healthier, fresher, more confident 2026.
